Brockway Memorial Library’s Summer Reading Program, 2023 to evidence the wonderful programs made possible for children and parents at Brockway Memorial Library last summer.

Interview with Brenda Holsing, Brockway Memorial Library Youth Services Librarian

What is the most impactful achievement that the Library had while offering the Summer Reading Program?

Children and young adults, along with their families, experience a sense of joy and wonder by exploring the world through their library. Offering the Summer Reading program to children and their families, brings them to the Library and this is our goal.

Kids, ages 4 and older, are invited to participate in this annual program, which is designed to encourage children to have fun at the Library while maintaining and developing their reading skills over the summer months. From storytelling to live shows to live animals, the 2023 Summer Reading presentations, story times, and activities had children exploring favorite stories, theatre and animals in the theme of kindness, friendship, inclusivity, and diversity.

The Summer Reading program also offers volunteer opportunities to teens and young adults in the community.

How many families did you have at the program?

The 2023 Summer Reading attendance at the presentations, story times, and activities was 785 children and adults. In addition, the Miami Shores Village Camp and the Scholastic Book Fair programs brought in attendance. In all during the summer, the Library offered a total of 20 youth programs with 1,228 people attending.

My favorite library memories as a Children’s Librarian interacting with the community are when children come to the Library and ask me what they should read.  I love asking them lots of questions about what they like, what books they have read in the past and discussing different possibilities in terms of genre. It is like solving a mystery and getting to know someone at the same time when we find the right book.  Being a Children’s Librarian is a wonderfully fulfilling career!

MIAMI
LIGHT
PROJECT

MIAMI
LIGHT
PROJECT

Miami Light Project is thrilled to be a first time Miami Shores Community Alliance grant recipient.

We received funds from the Alliance to support our annual signature commission program, Here & Now 2024. The Here & Now program cultivates the most unique and promising Miami-based performing artists and choreographers through commissioning residencies and presentation of short form work.

Since its inception, Miami Light Project has commissioned work from more than 100 South Florida-based artists, whose work has contributed to the growing reputation of Miami as a cultural center of international importance. Over 30 of those artists have gone on to perform that work in 14 states and 16 countries for an estimated worldwide audience of over 25,000.

Share with us some of the most cherished memories that the Here and Now Program has enabled between the artists and the community

There is a need to create meaningful year-round engagement exchange among local artists and the community at large. The Here & Now program streamlines the creative and production support we have historically provided to Miami-based artists and invites the local community to be part of the process. We will invite community members to learn about artistic creative processes through open rehearsals, work-in-progress showings and open dialogues. With the Here & Now program, we seek to deepen the impact we have on the community including Miami Shores residents by creating multiple interactions among Miami-based artists and our audiences.

Miami Light Project's Here and Now program has moved to the MTC in Downtown Miami Shores having completed a number of well attended performances. What opportunities would you like to realize with respect to your new location?

Here & Now Program is one of the best examples on how we make the effort to select, support and present artists who collectively represent all forms of diversity and whose work is complex and often challenging. It is in this way that we are able to develop audiences which are representative inclusive, and to advance meaningful dialogues and deeper relationships between artists, the neighborhood, the city, and the broader community we serve.

FOUNDATION

KISMET
DANCE
FOUNDATION

The Miami Shores Community Alliance has provided grants which have enabled the Kismet Dance Foundation to educate and make Middle Eastern dance more accessible to the residents of Miami Shores. As recipients of grants, our organization has been able to provide classes, lectures, and demonstrations for children and adults within the Miami Shores village free of charge (impacting over 150 individuals). Our most current endeavor will be to offer classes to adults (ages 55+), which will incorporate chair exercises, belly dance stretches, isolations and gentle combinations, that can help the student develop better balance and flexibility.

Interview with Carol Cocchi, Kismet Dance Foundation treasurer

What is the most impactful achievement completed with the grant received?

The most impactful goal for me was the fact that I was able to offer exercise classes to women, ages 55+ in which the participants were able to learn isolation, relaxation and stretching techniques, as well as doing basic combinations which can be the equivalent of a low impact aerobics class. The participants felt better, were in better spirits, and also experienced music and dance from another culture.

My favorite memory was of an event that was sponsored by Brockway Memorial Library: the Our Libraries Rock series. I gave a demonstration during the last program of the series.  Children and adults attended. It was an hour demonstration, there was a 30 minute Power Point presentation, describing the history of Middle Eastern dance, instruments used to play the music, and the differences in style of music and costuming used in the different Middle Eastern countries. The presentation was followed by a dance demonstration, where members of the audience were taught basic moves.  I was told thar there were 60 people in attendance, and it was the best attended in the series. It was a very positive experience for me, and many of the participants gave very positive feedback.
